The Rambler: Not Quite A Fast Muscle Car

I ran across this old photo of a Rambler dealership and it got me longing for the by gone days, but not necessarily for wanting a Rambler.
I remember all the Ramblers and at times they looked sort of awkward or different than the other cars on the road. They did manage to finally put out a couple of hot rods at the end of the road but it was too late by then. The AMX, the Javelin with the 390 engine are just two examples. But generally the cars were different at best and we all kind of chuckled if you had a Rambler.
My brother had a Rambler Ambassador for a while in the early 70’s. It was a four door car and the best feature of the car for us kids was the seats. If you took the front seats all the way forward and then tilted the back of the seats all the way back, the entire inside of the car became a big bed. We would go to the drive in movies, flip the seats down and watch a movie like we were lying in our bed. It was a cool feature for a rather weird car. I don’t recall the engine but it did have a V8 and my brother said it had plenty of power.
Now, you ask how did he land up with a Rambler if he was a muscle car guy? Well, we had a friend of the family who was in the car insurance business and would come across cars that were repossessed or rebuilds from wrecks. So, this guy would sell them for the insurance company at fire sale pricing to unload them. eventually they all faded away without much fanfare as people just were not buying the products anymore. It was a sad ending to what started out with such positive hope.
The Rambler did try to morph into other AMC cars, but it just didn’t quite make it. A car that could have been, but just doesn’t cut the mustard.
