Camaro Chief Engineer Goes To GM Working On EVs

Al Oppenheiser, the lead engineer on the fifth and sixth generation Camaro is to now head up GM’s new electric vehicle division according to online reports. GM will as of now start to move some of their top guys over to work on zero emission vehicles it was announced recently.

Oppenheiser will oversee a variety of different electric vehicles and this may even include performance cars, which stands to sense with his background with the Camaro. As this is the last variation from this generation of Camaro, it was a perfect time to move and now the reins will be passed to Mark Dickens who is the existing executive director of Performance Variants, Parts, Accessories, and Motorsports Engineering to carry on the Camaro’s legacy.

As the Mustang has been clearly outselling the Camaro recently, there will be a greater emphasis on entry-level models which will include a Camaro Turbo 1LE.

As for us all seeing an electrified version of the Camaro in the future is anybody’s guess, but it’s clear GM like the other major carmakers are going to be focusing on Ev’s as the current climate moves to more eco-friendly vehicles.
