Gas Vs. Diesel Engines: The Major Differences

Gas-Vs.-Diesel-

By Dave Ashton

This is another very informative and straight to the point video from Engineering Explained, giving you the major differences between a gasoline and diesel engine. The differences aren’t just about the noise they make, glow plugs or spark plugs, but the different setups and internal workings for each engine.

The major difference between the two types of engine is the way the air and fuel mixture are combined and compressed. Gasoline engines keep the compression ratio with the help of spark plugs and making sure the air fuel ratios do not rise above the self ignition temperature. Diesels on the other hand like to compress the fuel and air which can get better torque.

The video gives you a straightforward and simplified view of topics such as the self ignition temperature, how the gasoline engine uses a spark plug while the diesel engine uses compression to ignite the fuel.

This is a very oversimplified view of both engine types but the video goes into far more detail about both engine and the four major differences between both. Definitely worth a watch even if you do know the ins and outs of both engine types.
