Watching the ever growing wave of electric vehicles every year isn’t the most comforting news for muscle car fans. It’s work as usual at the moment with the ongoing V8 engine, but there’s going to be a time in the not too distant future when manufacturers are going to start to look to an electric alternative.

Luckily, there are designers and engineers already working on the problem and one such company is Electric GT from California, who are working on a crate engine which has all stylings of a classic V8, just within the electric format. The idea is to have a direct replacement for a traditional V8 engine, which can be dropped straight into a car without major modifications. This means that an existing transmission can be used and most of the present workings you would find in a traditional V8 vehicle.

The idea of the electric crate engine is for it to be modular. This means parts can be swapped out to fit personal requirements. At the moment this will include two crate engines in the lineup, with the most powerful being a 180 kilowatts (240 horsepower) version. The makers say that one of the main advantages will be extremely low maintenance ongoing, coupled with high performance.

Could this be the way to go for replacement V8 engines? It would be great to hear your thoughts on this matter, so please comment below.
