The rumour mill has been going into overdrive lately over the future of the Chevrolet Camaro. Firstly, the sixth generation Camaro may not get a replacement at the end of its 2023 life cycle. Then there may be a seventh gen. Camaro in 2025 and lastly, the next version of Camaro may just be a EV only model. Now, the track-focused Z/28 according to some sources, will not see the light of day.

Some reports said that initial work had been started on the sixth-gen. Camaro Z/28 along with the possibility of its own V8 engine the LT3, but work was stopped abruptly from the higher-ups in the company. The reasons? Freeing up cash for long-term progression, future high-tech. programs and electric vehicles. This means the ZL1 1LE stays at the top of the Camaro lineup.

On the surface, crazy decision-making to pull a model that has so much heritage and back history. The problem is these Halo vehicles take up a lot of development time and investment. Which brings it to the age-old battle of the accountancy department battling with the design department thing. But the big takeaway here is the bit about heavy investment into future electric vehicles and their included tech.

EV’s for both daily drivers and performance vehicles are front of mind for all carmakers. Nailing down EV powertrains, electric optimized transmissions, autonomous technology, retooling and new EV platforms builds are all taking investment and focus away from other areas, not just the Camaro and the Z/28. If this means a full or partial Camaro EV will come out in the future is a possibility, but there’s no official word as yet.

Me thinks a fully Electric Camaro is the way forward. The Chevy ECopo concept drag racer gives some indication of what a fully electric Camaro could be like. Based on the 2019 COPO Camaro, the electric motor pumps out the equivalent of 700HP and 600 lb-ft of torque. The development also points to possible Electric crate motors. Essentially, bolt one onto any General Motors transmission and away you go.

All we can say at this point is keep checking back here for regular updates. E-ponies may just be around the corner…..
