Would You Restore This Road Runner?
By Mark Weisseg
All of you by now know that I do not like anything going to the crusher if it has any chance of being restored. I always feel if there is a chance then we should try to find the right person with the right resources to bring the car back to life.
Then, I stumbled onto this picture of a Road Runner. A car I have and love quite a bit. There were many of them built back in the day and quite a few were lost to rust, neglect, and so on. But, this one I think may be at the end if the road.
Clearly it was smashed and burned and to bring this back to life is would be a monumental task. I guess if you found out it was one of one and it’s worth was very high but even then I think it’s time to stick a fork in it. It might be yard art, or a conversation piece at a body shop so maybe it’s not really over yet but one will need an imagination to see past its issues. We all know there are still untouched RR cars out there to be restored yet and possibly it is time to restore a car that was restored once before. But, this one is not a two week deal. It’s not a two year deal. It’s the definition of a money pit.
However, it would be interesting to know the history of this car and what happened. That is much easier said than done. How do I know this? Personal experience. My ’69 was restored by a professional restorer in 2014 and I bought it from a dealer. They cannot tell me the restorer due to privacy laws. So, we may never know some cars and the history behind them but in the meantime, should we throw in the towel?
