Muscle Car Talk: The Classic Corvette Was Not Always The Fastest
By Mark Weisseg
It is very hard to call this old Corvette a fast muscle car. They were far from it at the time. Yes, they are now classics and yes highly desirable, but at least not the fastest out there. obviously, today’s Corvettes are a different matter, but the story started with more visually appealing cars rather than the fastest on the strip.
They were sleek, yes desirable and ahead if it’s time. But, there were several other cars on the market back then that were faster. The Corvette was sold as a sports car. Two seater, originally came with carbs and later fuel injection, but still not a hot rod by today’s standards. By today’s standards they are collectible, fun, expensive, and desirable.
Left as stock and you get into a street race, you are going to look very dumb. Why do you think some of the rebuilders drop in larger engines in these today? Same holds true for the first Mustangs back in ’64 and early ’65. Little six cylinders with automatics or three speeds on the floor. Once the light bulb went on in, they finally realized they had a light weight car and with a bigger engine they could wipe the track clean. Look at what Carroll Shelby did. He had to go get an AC Bristol light weight body and drop that over the engine to get the desired results.
It is so much different today with the technology but everything has a starting point and if you were alive back in those days you witnessed history in the making. It was fun, educational and now, expensive.
