The Memories Of A Fine, Plymouth Road Runner
By Mark Weisseg
When I was a teenager, a girl I was dating had a brother. This brother had a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440 engine and an automatic transmission. It also had a great stereo in it and really nice seats. He had put on some sort of louder exhaust pipes on it and it sounded so cool. I admit to jealously at that young age but even back then I liked the ’68 to ’70 Road Runners more.
His car was bright yellow with black stripes and a black interior. He did not drive it very much and always told anyone that would listen he would keep it forever.
When we would ride in it we would blast the radio back then. We of course only had AM radios playing rock and roll music and FM was rare. But, he had an eight track player that he installed and we could listen to Led Zeppelin or Rocking Rod Stewart without commercial interruptions. The car was bulky, big, and a bit fast back in the day. I have very fond memories of that Road Runner and ironically today I own a 69 RR.
But, time marches on and I know my friend sold his Road Runner in the 80’s and moved out west to be a cowboy. I have no idea if that car even exists today but I can tell you back in the mid to late 70’s we rock and rolled in a bad ass yellow Road Runner.
This is the point of our muscle car hobby. It’s not just about owning the vehicle, it’s the social aspect and those memories we can cherish for a lifetime.
