Find Of The Day: 1970 Dodge Charger 500 Special Edition
By David Ashton
Engine: 383 Magnum
Transmission: torqueflite Automatic
Mileage: 96,263
Current bid: $5,900.00
This 1970 Dodge Charger 500 has all the traits of a muscle car worthy of a full restoration, having apparently been saved from its previous owner’s long backyard stay. Being a 500 SE means this is a surefire rarity and with a starting bid of only $5000, this could be a great find put into the right hands.
The car was apparently first sold in December 1969 to 2 twin sisters in Piqua OH, then sold on a year later to a gentleman who drove the car up to 1979 then left in his driveway. The car was then moved to the back of his house, where it stayed until it was bought very recently. (‘part of the furniture’ syndrome since come to mind with cars left this long in plain view!)
The car is apparently completely original apart from the Cragar wheels and glass pack mufflers and has a numbers matching 383 big block, with all the original fittings like the 8 track recorder, A/C, disc brakes, etc.
For a car that has been sat for decades, there will be the obvious problems of un-sticking everything, from the engine to fully working brakes, but one of the main issues here is the rust. Plenty across the whole car, but it’s unclear how deep it really goes from the images.
Considering everything should be completely original on this car and with 27,461 Charger 500’s made in 1970, possibly only 2,887 being SE’s according to the 1970chargerregistry.com this could be a definite rarity needed to be brought back to life.
The car has all the traits of a potential great restoration project, and any muscle car which falls into the realm of a rarity should be a de facto standard for restoration. What do you guys think?
