Chevy Camaro Says Mustang’s been ‘Eating our lunch’
By Dave Ashton
The pony and muscle car wars don’t just rage on the power and performance front, but also on pricing and sales. Now is no different from the old days, in this case it is Chevrolet Camaro’s chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser speaking to Automotive News saying the Mustang has been, ‘eating our lunch.’
The Ford Mustang has been beating out the Camaro in sales and Oppenheiser now says it’s time to play offense. The four-cylinder side of the market is what needs most improvement, with the Camaro dropping into third place below the Dodge Challenger. In contrast, the Camaro beat the Mustang four years in a row on sales until the sixth generation Mustang came out in 2015.
This all means that the entry-level vehicles from Chevy will get a price reduction, such as the 1LS model cut from $1,000 to $25,995. Similar price cuts are due for the 1LT and 2LT models.
The 2019 Camaro Turbo 1LE with 275 horsepower, taking elements from the Camaro SS and Camaro V-6 1LE models will hope to challenge hot hatchbacks and give ‘affordable performance.’ Starting prices will be $30,995, with the Mustang EcoBoost Performance package, starting at $29,610, but with less performance equipment.
All this should mean better price points for the consumer at the more affordable end of the market more features for the money.
