Even today muscle cars from the late 1960s to early 1970s are revered for their power and torque. We may have more fuel-efficient cars these days, but those classic muscle cars still represent a full on focus on power with designs on styling that are just as popular today. Here we have a look at the top five most powerful muscle cars from that era.

5. 1970 Chevelle SS 454

The superstore version of the 1970s Chevelle is probably one of the landmark muscle cars, being dubbed the king of the road , and quite rightly so. The top size engines were the 454 and the 396, which had cowl induction and fantastic looks. This second-generation model had a 454 LS6 V8 engine with four speed transmission, 3.55 rear end and a quarter mile time of 13.12 seconds at 107.01mph.

4. 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Hemi

It was really 1970 when the third-generation Barracuda became the muscle car we know today. Releasing itself from the Valiant platform, the car shared the new E-body with the Dodge Challenger and a legend was born. there were many engine options, which started with a 198cu. Slant six, but it was the 426cu. (7.0 L) hemi V8 that got the most interest. Shaker hood, Dana 60, 9.75in. (248 mm) ring gear with a manual transmission completed the setup. The engine produced 425 HP fewer four-speed transmission.

3. 1969 Road Runner

With only 84,000 being produced in 1969 Roadrunner is a muscle car rarity, which featured a 440cu. engine and 3xHolley 2-barrel carburettor. This produce 390 HP and 490lbs. ft. of torque. The Roadrunner had a ET of 12.91 seconds at 111.80 mph.

2. 1966 Corvette 427

The Corvette Stingray was already a classic so adding a L72 427cu. engine meant not necessarily an increasing horsepower over the 396cu. but torque did increase to 460 lb.ft. Horsepower ratings before 1972 were generally underrated, which meant the 66 Corvette was probably around 420 to 450 hp. 27,720 were made this year and with a ET of 12.8seconds at 112mph the Corvette was incredibly fast for its day.

1. 1966 Shelby Cobra 427

Not only the fastest, but also possibly one of the rarest, the 1966 Shelby Cobra sported a 427cu. engine and was initially a collaboration between AC Cobra in England and Carroll Shelby’s engineering prowess. The horsepower rating was 425 with 3.54 ratio gears on a light body. Many replicas are produced due to their now incredible price tags, but the original is still rated at one of the finest sports cars of its time. An Et of 12.20 seconds at 118mph.
