My Visit To The Mecum Auction Chicago

I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Mecum auction in Chicago over the weekend.

I included a few pictures I snapped to give you some food for thought. The auction was for everyone and it seemed everyone was there.

The Mustang pictured here went for a cool $245,000. Of course that was one of the high water marks but, there were cars there for as low as $2,000.

If you want to enter the fast muscle car world always go to an auction on the first day. Deals are plentiful and Chicago was no exception. The last day is always the high end cars so you get to plan accordingly.
If you desire to bid you must do so in advance in order to prove you have the money to do so. The crowds were large each day and the bidding strong. Whether you bid in person, on the phone or on the Internet the auction companies make it easy.
I could have gone home with a dozen cars easily as the selection was large. The “Midway” of each auction gives you an opportunity to buy die cast cars, gas pumps, T shirts and much more.

The one item I was looking for was the old Eco air pumps. They had them but at $2,300 each I passed. The weather was great so we were able to walk under the tents full of cars at our own pace. So many choices and so much excitement in the air as well. You will feel at home at these auctions because there is something for everyone.

I did not bid at this auction as I am in the process of buying a building for my collection. But, I was sorry I did not bid. A 1986 Buick Grand National in great shape sold for $14,500. I was grimacing in pain when I watched that car sell so cheap. Remember my friends I saw that car close up, spoke with the owner and then watched it sell. That was a no reserve car. So, it was going to sell at whatever the auctioneer could squeeze out of the crowd. I really regretted not bidding. The reserve cars have a minimum on them and the bids must get to that number. You don’t know what that number is until the man with the gavel lifts the reserve.

It’s exciting, it’s fun, and you will meet people from all over the world. It cost us thirty dollars each to get in with multiple day passes available. This auction offers free parking with a shuttle bus if needed. Food and drinks are available but they are stiff on the pricing.

If you have not attended an auction there are many across the country every year. It’s a fun way to enjoy our hobby and a great place to buy a car.
I am heading to the SEMA show in November and then on to Barrett Jackson in January. I will be sure to keep all of you abreast of what I see and do at each. But, we are muscle car people first and foremost so if you want to get up close and personal these auctions are for you.
