2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS vs BMW M2 Drag Race
By John Sharples
A good old drag race is one of the best acid tests for the new generation of muscle cars, especially when its opponent is one of its European competitors.
It wasn’t so long ago that a drag race like this one would have had an obvious winner before the start, but muscle cars of 2016 and 2017 are a new breed which are causing surprises across the market.
The Camaro SS has a 6.2L LT1 V8 engine with 455 HP and 455lbs. ft. of torque, giving it a 0 to 60 mph time of four seconds, quicker than the BMW M2.
The BMW on the other hand, is a 3L turbocharged in-line six, which has 365 HP and 343lbs. ft. of torque, with a 0 to 60 time of 4.1 seconds.
Obviously, the weight factor plays a large part in the times above, but to make this drag race as fair as possible, the guys in the video did a static start and a rolling start to compare.
Launch controls aside, it’s still down to the skill of the driver to get any vehicle going off the line, but the results of the video are still interesting to see how the two vehicles match up.
Aside from the outcome, the Camaro still has that ‘X Factor’ gene. The BMW may have its engineering heritage, but the Camaro will always win on thrill factor and that certain something of wildness, which you just can’t build into a European vehicle.
