The 10 Top Muscle Car Chases

Like actors of a certain generation or decade, muscle cars have played supporting roles in many great movies and TV shows.

Some of these vehicles defined a movie, while others played important ‘extra’ parts. Would Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ have been the same great movie without a Challenger and Nova? I can’t visualise the movie otherwise.

Anyway, here’s a rundown of the top 10 movies and TV shows that featured great muscle cars.

10. AMC Hornet – The Man With The Golden Gun, 1974

‘You’re not thinking a………’
‘I sure am boy!’

In 1974, if you wanted to show an amazing stunt on screen, you had to do it for real.
Even today, the barrel roll stunt is possibly one of the most amazing put on screen. Inch perfect driving was needed and you just have to watch the scene a few times to appreciate how difficult the stunt was at the time.
The AMC Hornet is not the most classic of muscle cars, but it sure did gain some credibility from the scene.

9. 71 Chevrolet Nova SS – Deathproof 2007
Who can forget the sinister presence of the Chevy Nova in Death Proof. The final car chase is the big one of the film, but the Nova sets the tone of the film and there couldn’t be a better car choice for these scenes.

8. 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – Smokey And The Bandit, 1974
I don’t think I have ever met anybody who doesn’t enjoy a Smokey And The Bandit film. Great fun, great car chases and at the time, everybody wanted a Firebird!

7. 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT, Mad Max 2 1981
It’s easy now to look at the original Mad Max films and wonder why the guy is driving around in an empty desert during a fuel shortage with a supercharged V8, but when you watch this film, dispel all links with reality, this is a great action movie.
What counts here is the big V8, the road warrior attitude and the raw muscle power.
Watch all the originals if you can.

6. 1976 Chevrolet Camaro – Transformers, 2007
Yes, it’s a film franchise based on a toy, but it really did make the world aware of the old and new Camaros.
It’s almost a shame that the 76 Camaro was featured so beaten up, but Chevrolet want to sell more of their new Camaros, than 76 models!
Suddenly everybody knew how cool a yellow Camaro can be.

5. 1974 Dodge Monaco – Blues Brothers 1980

Bluesmobile
Holding the record up to 1998 for the most cars destroyed in one film, the BluesMobile and the other police cars were not the most classic of muscle out there, but they waddled round the streets in a great classic car chase, resulting in the most fantastic car pileup you will ever see on film.

4. 1970 Dodge Challenger – Vanishing Point, 1971
In the context of the times, Vanishing Point was a start to finish thrill ride, stamped in place by the 1970s supercharged Dodge Challenger.
If you haven’t seen this movie already, watch it now.

3. 1969 Dodge Charger – Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, 1974
Yes, you could include the 66 Chevrolet Impala, but the Dodge Charger is the star of this movie. Start to finish excitement, watch this movie to see this classic muscle car wins its stripes.

2. 1968 Mustang GT, Bullitt, 1968
Bullitt didn’t just cement Steve McQueen’s presence, but also that of the Mustang GT.
In the video clip below, we all know that Dodge would have left the Mustang in the dust, but this isn’t a rivalry between makes and models, it’s the characters and the chase.
This was the era of raw engine power and cool, which Bullitt is hard to surpass.

1. 1969 Dodge Charger – Dukes of Hazzard, 2005
This may be controversial to some putting the Duke’s Dodge Charger at number one, but for six years the TV show gave us plenty of great muscle car stunts, chases and general fun viewing of classic muscle cars. This along with the eye candy of Daisy Duke makes the TV show one of the best ever. Do you know anybody who doesn’t know the General Lee?
This show is of its time and when the world was a smaller place, so to get a weekly dose of great car stunts and chases really was a thrill at the time.
