Muscle Car Match Up: Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye Or Camaro ZL1

Say you want super car level power without the huge price tag or astronomical maintenance costs. Two options could be the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye Or Camaro ZL1. Both are very capable muscle cars and the latest development in the breed. However, the interesting thing about the matchup video below is the fact that the ZL1 is being compared to the Redeye. Its the usual course of events that a Camaro takes on a Mustang in the comparison stakes, so this line should make for interesting viewing. Pony vs. muscle.

On one hand the Hellcat Redeye takes a huge influence from the limited edition Dodge Demon and produces a more readily available package. A 6.2L Hemi V8 and a 2.7L supercharger sit under the hood and produce 797HP, rather than the 840HP made with the Demon. The same eight speed automatic transmission is used in the Redeye as per the Demon with many of the same features, such as torque reserve system and launch control. The Redeye is also more track capable than the Demon with Bilstein suspension and Brembo brakes. The interior also has more daily functionality like the Hellcat. Basically, if the Hellcat and the Demon had a kid, it would be the Redeye.

On the flipside, the Camaro ZL1 has a Supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 with less output at 650 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft of torque, but has less curb weight and arguably is more track focused. options of a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission, electronic limited-slip rear differential and magnetic suspension.

But it’s not just about what’s under the hood. What’s the styling like inside and out? Can you live with one of these on a daily basis and most importantly, which is the better buy? No spoilers here, but one takeaway is that both provide ridiculous power for the money and while the Challenger is pure muscle car, the ZL1 is more sports car in it’s application.
