Vector W8: The Short Lived American Supercar
We usually leaves supercar content to our sister site, newmusclecars.org, but this example just about stretches to a vehicle that can be termed a classic.
The Vector W8 was produced between 1990 to 1993 by the Vector Aeromotive Corporation, with just 19 versions been produced, two of which were preproduction cars.
The car was based on their Vector W2, the modified Chevrolet 350cu V8 GM three speed transmission. The engines had to turbochargers is pumped out around 650 hp and 649lb ft. of torque, within estimate top speed of around 220 mph.
The car originally sold for around $448,000, but can now be found from that price to over $1 million depending on the condition and if you can force one out of the owners hands.
The company was short lived and had low production numbers, but the sensibilities and powertrain were based on American engineering principles, it just couldn’t make it to a wider audience. This was obviously a shame, as it beat its competitors in many different areas and was built to last a lifetime.
This coupled with the fact that it was built to take on the best supercars of the day and could match keep up with them in many areas, including their top speeds.
In a hypothetical world, it will be interesting if the vector W8 became a hit, what the American muscle car and/or supercar landscape would look like now?
I am sure at the least there would be more contenders in the muscle car and supercar market than there is today.
Maybe we need a few more Vector W8 like makers to come along….
