Two Plymouth muscle Car Driver Get To Drive the Infamous Bathurst Dream
By Dave Ashton
Two intrepid Plymouth drivers will fulfil their dream of 13 years in October, racing at Bathurst.
According to stuff.co.nz, Ross Graham and Steve Hildred will be part of a 26 person Kiwi muscle car team which will face up to 26 Australians for the race next month.
Overall, this has been a long time in the making, both drivers are there to enjoy themselves more than anything else.
“I’ll be happy to finish with no scratches on the car,” Hildred, who will racing a Holden HT 1969 Monaro, said.
Although they aren’t taking the race too seriously, they have a lot of challenges through the course.
“There’s a corner called the skyline because all you can see is sky as you come around it,” Hildred said.
“It’s the most iconic track in the southern hemisphere,” Graham, who’ll be driving a 1977 Holden SLR500 Terano, said.
Both guys, now in their 60s and been racing for 20 years with Hildred starting in drag racing and progressing to muscle cars, while Graham focused more on motorbikes.
Both are happy to take part at this time as the race still focuses on the eight engines before everything moves over to turbos.
“V8’s are popular because people recognize the cars, either they had one or they always wanted one,” Graham said.
