Students Work To Transform a Camaro Into A Hybrid

Any time I hear murmurs of a V8 engine being replaced by a hybrid or electric motor, I want to cover my ears and shout loudly like a little child, so I cannot hear. However, like it or not, hybrids and electric engines are on the move forward, so we might as well pay attention.

ASU’s Polytechnic students are working on a long-term plan to make a Camaro into a high-performance hybrid.

Around 45 students are working on the project over a three-year course, adding not only a hybrid engine but also smart technology.

“To basically try to analyze the environment around the vehicle and have the vehicle understand what’s happening, so if it sees a pedestrian or a car in front of it or a a traffic sign or a stop sign, this is mainly for assisting the drive to make the driving conditions more comfortable and make the experiences more safe,” a student said.

Due to the work on the vehicle, some of the students have already been placed as automotive engineers in the industry.
