Late Night Photos of Auckland’s 1970’s V8 Scene

Murray Cammick is known for introducing New Zealand’s artists to the rest of the world by his record labels and radio shows, but before all that happened, Murray captured the youth of the time in their V8 muscle cars.

The images are currently on show at Black Asterisk and capture the Auckland nightlife along with some of the cool cars of the time.

The images were taken between 1974 to 1981, capturing most of the late-night scenes, until the early 80s, when the scene disappeared.

The negatives were initially lost for quite a number of years until mid-2014. They were discovered again unpublished in Art Of Te Papa (2009), NZ Photography Collected (2015, Te Papa Press) and Into The Light: A History Art Of NZ Photography (2006, Craig Potten Press).
