Is It Worth Buying A Yenko Replica?
By Dave Ashton
If you’re a muscle car fan and partial to Chevy’s, then it may be on your bucket list to one day own a Yenko. These were the prized performance vehicles of their day, but they were also produced in very limited numbers and are now worth a king’s ransom. The next nearest option could be to own a replica, but the word itself always has negative connotations, like a copy or not the real thing.
However, just like a custom build, it’s really down to the individual vehicle and how well it’s done. If someone has tried to build a replica to exacting standards, just like the original, it’s more of a homage or like for like interpretation. At the end of the day you end up with a beautiful vehicle, which looks as good as it performs at a decent price, then why not.
I found two listings on eBay which should give you an idea of the market in two ends of the price spectrum. The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro below is a fine looking vehicle dressed to look like a vintage yank or but with a 90s Corvette 350ci. engine with electronic fuel injection. The car is in fantastic condition with all the outside looks of a vintage Yenko, book will be seen as more of a custom with that engine. It’s got start off price of $27,950.00, but that’s likely to zoom up until it is sold.
The other Camaro Yenko is from RK Motors, you may have the highest prices, but also should guarantee the best quality vehicles. This example is more like a true original Yenko with a 454 V8, Muncie M21 4-speed and all the other bits that you would associate with an original. It’s also ultra low mileage with only 61 miles on the clock, but you also have to pay for this attention to detail with an asking price of $79,900.00.
When you’re buying into a tribute car, it should have a bit more than just a few decals slapped on the hood. Ideally, it should be a part of part copy of an original, then it shows that the effort has been put in to replicate a classic. Then the respect comes along for the attention to detail. Both of these cars are worth the money, this so it’s really down to how close a copy you want and how much you’re willing to spend.
