A 1971 Plymouth Barracuda, 7-litre 425 horsepower big block V8-powered drop top , convertible that cost US$5000 when new, has been sold at auction for over NZ$4 million.

Described as the “Holy Grail of muscle cars” by auctioneers Mecum.
One of just 11 made in 1971. Ten years ago another of the 11 was sold at auction for US$1m.

It is also one of just two with a four-speed transmission and of those two it is only one with its original powertrain.

Making it even more valuable was the fact it was a unique matching-numbers car.

One previous owner of this car was renowned cartoonist Russ Meyer.

Bidding lasted eight minutes for the at the auction in Seattle, Washington, earlier this week.

The final price made it the most expensive Chrysler product ever sold at auction.
