Historic Muscle Cars: The 1967 Pontiac GTO
By David Ashton
The humble Pontiac ‘Goat’ is considered by many the first of its breed of muscle car.
Introduced in 1963 as an option package for the Pontiac Tempest, the 389ci/325HP cost $4,500. It had stylistic changes until it became its own model in 1966 with the A body design getting the “Coke-bottle” look and the tail light louvered cover, only available on the GTO.
The length of the car only expanded to 206.4 in. this year and a Ram Air package option was available.
It was around this time that Pontiac tried to promote the car as the ‘GTO tiger’ but it got the ‘Goat’ moniker instead, which has stuck to this day.
1967 saw the last of this style of GTO. A few modifications were made to the model this year, such as eight tail lights in total, Rally II wheels and the chrome split grill.
You could have bought the GTO this year in either a hardtop, convertible or sports coupe. The 389ci. engine went up to 400ci. . Available in economy, standard and high output, with a top power of 360HP. With this, you got a three speed Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400 transmission and a ‘his and hers’ Hurst Performance dual-gate shifter.
From 1968 to 1972 the classic era GTO muscle cars were produced with a new look and models such as the ubiquitous ‘Judge’ with a 455 HO engine. However, by 1974 the golden years had gone for the GTO, but in just a few short years the model and design had stamped its mark in automotive history.
The GTO did come back between 2004 2006 with some decent models, but it didn’t capture the imagination as the original.
