The Mercury Cougar has a long history going back to 1967 and went through eight generations up until its last gasp in 2002. The first generation like many muscle cars is seen as the most classic with arguably the best design and this example is no different.
This one is a classic XR7, I’m in great shape but doesn’t mention if it has been restored or well maintained over the years. The ad. says the only issues are –
‘Small oil leak at front cover
Excess play in steer control valve
Intermittent ignition fault (solenoid)
Front passenger side window crank knob missing
Handful of small chips and faint scratches in exterior paint
Three of the hub cap centers missing’
One of the main standout features for the Mercury Cougar is the hideaway headlights, which look incredible when down. Personally, I prefer the front-end design of the 1970 Mercury Cougar with a more smooth front end look, but the 68 isn’t that far behind.
This example has the intermediate 302 cu in (4.9 L) Windsor V8 (4 barrel) engine, which won’t break the sound barrier, but will still give you the vintage ride experience.
In total, this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 may not be the rarest muscle car out there or fetch the highest price, but for $15,000 you’re getting a lot of vintage muscle car for your money and in very good condition.
