Dodge Viper drift car At 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed
By Dave Ashton
If you’ve never heard of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it’s held in the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, UK. Started as an annual hill climb event, it’s also an attraction for some ridiculously expensive vehicles and a celebration of why we all love these fourwheeled machine things.
The hill climb is usually a timed event, but to break from the norm. Dean Kearney, Formula Drift car ace, took his Dodge Viper for a spin or two up the course. A definite change from the usual ultra-expensive classics trying for their fastest times.
Following a rain soaked course, the Viper’s lap was more about spectacle and flamboyance, showing the crowd how American muscle tackles the course. Not everyone can get the fastest time, but everyone can put on a show. The best way to do this is to take an American performance vehicle with ridiculous power levels and let it do what it naturally knows best. The Viper continually throws the rear end out and also does a few donuts for good measure. Slipping and sliding is just far more fun to watch.
The car itself isn’t your everyday Viper. The 8.4-liter V10 engine has been upped to 1,350 horsepower with 16 pounds of boost. Add in the fine sound from the V10 engine and the Viper dances up the course like an Olympic figure skater.
Just check out the video above. It’s only a few minutes long and definitely worth a watch.
