Chevy Drop 10 Speed Automatic Transmission In The New 640HP Camaro ZL1
The days of the manual transmission could be numbered as Chevy put a new 10 speed automatic transmission in the 2017 Camaro ZL1.
The 640Hp/640ft. lbs. of torque 2017 Camaro ZL1 will have a lightning fast, 10 speed automatic transmission, with six clutches and a 7.39 gear ratio.
The idea is that the new transmission will have more aggressive gear ratios in the lower end, with more refinement in the upper gears, giving more torque conversion throughout the range.
The gear ratios are as follows – first gear ratio is 4.70:1, up from 4.56 in the previous-generation eight-speed. Second gear is at 2.99:1 (up from 2.97), third at 2.15 (vs 2.08), fourth at 1.80 (vs 1.69), fifth at 1.52 (vs 1.27), sixth at 1.28 (vs 1.0), seventh at 1.00 (vs 0.85), eighth at 0.85 (vs 0.65), ninth at 0.69, and tenth at 0.64.
The transmission is made completely from aluminum with an electronically controlled capacity clutch (ECCC) to dampen engine pulses.
The new 10 speed Hydra-Matic transmission will be built in GM’s new Romulus, Michigan plant, with the new transmission being planned to be added to 8 other models in the next two years.
