Are 6 Cylinders Classic Muscle Cars?
By Mark Weisseg
I know you are scratching your head thinking I have gone off the deep end. I don’t think this is a classic muscle car and I believe that with all my heart.
This car belongs to a friend of mine and it is his second dream car. The first dream car is a 69 or 70 Mach 1 but he has yet to mortgage his house and sell a kidney to buy one. So, he bought this Mustang as a consolation prize. Oh yes, it is a nice car with red leather interior, drop top obviously, a nice stereo, nice wheel and tire package and some other goodies. He thinks it is a classic and I hate to disagree with him but I will.
First, it is a six cylinder car. Yes, it has 300 horsepower and it’s kind of quick. But, have you ever heard a six banger with flow masters? Awful.
I know I have mentioned in the past that a ’56 Bel Air with a little six cylinder is a classic but it’s different. Back then, nobody thought a ’56 Bel Air was going to be considered in the future as a classic.
When they were sold it was as a family car or a second car for Mrs. Cleaver. Today, we know better. Time has proven this and if you want a future classic today you do not go out and buy a four cylinder Mustang. Nope. You buy a GT. Same with Camaro or Challenger. The six cylinder is nice but if you desire real power, and real manhood you go deep into the biggest engines available.
Just like the young crowd today buying old Toyota’s and Honda’s with the massive four cylinder engines and putting a large old coffee type can on for a muffler.
Is that a classic muscle car? Nope, not now and not in the future. If you want to be in the Classic Muscle Car world you need; A Classic car, A Muscle car, not a Pee Wee Herman car, and most of all the gumption to back it up. Rice burners do not apply. Go to the China buffet for your car show. We in the Muscle car world never had it so good. Parts availability, amazing artists whether paint or wraps, engine diagnostics and tuning, and best of all/ a load of men and women dedicated to classic muscle cars. Not, four cylinder, high revving washing machine engines. So, I stand by my argument that a six cylinder Mustang with a decal stripe is not a classic muscle car. Check my Ford Mustang GT and you will wish you wore ear plugs. And, when I hit the throttle you are in for the ride of your life. That my friend is a classic muscle car.
