The 5 Most Powerful Modern Muscle Cars

By  |

It seems at times like muscle car makers were sent out of the classroom in the mid-70s to think about where they had gone wrong. 30 years later they are back better than ever. No more arguing about handling or any other issues.
The other bonus is that you are getting supercar power for sports car prices. Plus, giving the competitors a run for their money, again. Win/win for the consumer.

Here we have 5 of the current most powerful muscle cars. I say current, as happily, this will soon be out of date, just like in the good old days where year-on-year the cars improved each year.
Here are the top 5 most powerful muscle cars on the market today.

2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat – 707 HP

The Dodge Hellcat in both Charger and Challenger form, supercharged, pardon the pun, the current muscle car market.
The stats speak for themselves. 707HP, 650lbs. ft. of torque from the 6.2 L supercharged hemi V8 engine. Available with a 6 speed manual or 8 speed automatic transmission. It may also be the heaviest of the bunch at 4,449 pounds, but it’s pure modern muscle.

2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – 650 HP

We know it is strictly an American sports car, but just like in our article about the definition of a muscle car, we are including the ZO6 because we can.

Probably the most ubiquitous American sports car, the seventh generation Corvette, is sportier than ever with added muscle.
A 6.2L, 376 ci supercharged V8 with 650HP, 650 lb-ft of torque and a 7 speed manual or 8 speed automatic transmission as standard.

2016 Dodge Viper – 645 HP

The Dodge Viper has been around for a number of years now and is still respected for its raw driving experience.
Although reports say production may stop in 2017, it is still producing raw performance, especially in limited edition versions like the Viper ACR.
The engine is an all aluminum 8.4L V10 engine with 645HP and 600 lbs. ft. of torque. The ACR version is good for 0-60mph in low 3 seconds and a top track speed of 206mph.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – 640 HP

Newer than a newborn baby, the Camaro ZL1 LT4 is the latest performance machine from Chevrolet. Lots of new features such as the magnetic ride suspension and electronics limited slip differential, should make this ZL1 a great track vehicle.

A 6.2L LT supercharged V8 engine with 640HP and 640lbs. ft. of torque, through a 6 speed manual or a 10 speed automatic transmission.
The Chevrolet Performance Data Recorder can also video your driving sessions along with performance data. Cool stuff.

2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 – 526 HP

The Shelby GT350 has been the top of the stack since the 1960s as a performance vehicle.
The 2017 model will have the Track Package as standard, with new colors, but the main draw is the 5.2L Flat Plane Crank V8 with 526HP and 429lbs. ft. of torque. A Tremec 6 speed transmission is fitted as standard.
It may have the lowest horsepower rating of the bunch, but in reality it will be plenty for the majority of drivers, who want a powerful muscle (pony) car with track capabilities.
