Plum Crazy Mopar: Does It Get Any Better Than This?
By Mark Weisseg
Again I take you back to SEMA two years ago and we were wandering around aimlessly trying to take it all in. Then, the two us old guys stumble on to this plum crazy Mopar. We lost ourselves in the paint detail, engine bay, and interior. The car was so flawless it was worthy of additional time to gawk at. I mean we had much more to do and see but Craig and I are old Mopar guys at heart even though I have strayed into other cars. But this car was just so nice we wanted to take it all in and swap a story or two about these cars.
You see, Dad started us on Superbirds, Chargers, Roadrunners, Demons, Hemi engines and more. So, we cut our teeth on these great cars of the sixties and seventies but I admit for me they fell out of favor when I saw a Dodge GLH and a Duster remained Roadrunner. So we both still have a very deep affection for the older Mopar’s and this rock and roll star hit the ball out of the park.
We question how they went from Cuda’s, Challengers, Chargers, and Roadrunners, to rehashed Darts, Dodge 200’s, and PT Cruisers. It was a fall from grace with the Plymouth name being dumped from the line up and the Dodge Ram becoming just Ram. Now, I read the CEO of Fiat Chrysler floated an idea to merge with General Motors. An unlikely marriage for sure but I could picture Dad rolling over in his grave.
We all know things change and at times it is hard to accept the changes. Just think of all the car names that are no longer with us. Let me throw you the bone and you finish the thought. AMC, Studebaker, Packard, Mercury, Cord, Auburn, Essex, and…….
Let’s hope moving forward the big guys don’t slap names like Cuda on a weak car that does not deserve the title. Challenger certainly got it right as did Mustang and Camaro. But, I will scream if I see another car named after a classic from the 60’s or 70’s without regard to its heritage.
