2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Test Drive
First there was the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat with 707HP, then the Dodge Demon with 808HP, with a possible boost up to 840HP. Now, we have the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with 797 hp to frighten the neighbours. The Demon may have been limited to only 3,300 vehicles, with 300 being sent to Canada, but it proved the point that muscle cars were as popular as ever.
The 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye incorporates the best of both the Hellcat and the Demon to produce 797 hp for a base price of $72,745. Quite a reasonable price considering all that horsepower. Externally, you can spot the Redeye from its dual snorkel hood, while underneath is housed a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with a 2.7-liter supercharger and twin fuel pumps from the Dodge Demon. This is fed through a 8-speed automatic transmission contained in its 4,500 pound frame.
The redeye doesn’t have the Demons transmission brake or Drag mode, but it will have launch control and a launch assist system. A line-lock system holds the front brakes in place for warming up the tires or doing a burnout (275mm standard, 305mm on the wide-body package.)
The accompanying video here gives one of the first reviews of the Redeye and in many ways a comparison against equal horsepower which you could probably find in a supercar costing 10 times the amounts. A thunderous exhaust and screaming supercharger clearly add to the excitement, but it also has modern day handling, being compared to or even bettering the Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack 2 and BMW M5 for handling.
With a changing automotive landscape where things seem to becoming more sanitised each year, the Redeye is the latest incarnation which shows that we still want some good old-fashioned brute force from our driving experience.
