This review of the 2018 Dodge Challenger GT AWD is titled, ‘The Muscle Car That Can’t Do Burnouts,’ but that’s not the no.1 point of this car. It has to have muscle car DNA, but is squarely aimed at those who want the rawness of a muscle car, but can drive it confidently in all weathers.

Although rearwheel drive is the most fun, it may not always be the most practical in slippery weather. This means traction becomes paramount, so blasting off with a burnout has to become secondary to actual full-time traction. It’s basically horses for courses. The car itself features a 220 cu in. 3605cc DOHC 24-valve V-6 engine with 305 hp at 6350 rpm and 268 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. This runs through a 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode, a manual version not available. Curb weight is a hefty 4103 lbs.

Clearly it’s a muscle car and should be rearwheel drive, but at least it’s an option from the lineup. If it was the only one available then we would be worried, but the Challenger range has a decent lineup to choose from. The most basic SXT’s, then the R/T’s, T/A’s, 392 and the Hellcat, so there should be something muscle car wise for everybody.

So, the basic conclusion is if you want a modern muscle car with the peace of mind of it can operate safely in all weathers, this may be an option starting at $34,490. However, some online reviews said that although the AWD feature is capable, they would rather stick with the rearwheel drive and winter tires. what do you think?
