A 2017 Dodge Challenger For All Seasons: SXT To Hellcat To GT
By Dave Ashton
We are arguably living in the best time for new muscle cars since the golden age of the late 60s and early 70s. All three muscle car manufacturers of Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge are producing fine vehicles which are not only giving us the best of the past, but also dispelling all the old myths about muscle cars such as they are only good in a straight line.
From the start of 2017 Dodge can offer a Challenger model which should be able to fit anybody’s pocket with the added bonus of having that extra sense of cool of a muscle car. The 2017 range starts with the Dodge Challenger SXT with a 305-HP 3.6L Pentastar® V6 Engine, starting at $27,190 MSRP. A V8 engine should be the only choice for a muscle car, but times are a changing and people still want the muscle car sensibilities without being such a gas hog. The Pentastar engine still has plenty of ‘oomph’ if you want to put pedal to metal plus, you’re still getting a Challenger and the peace of mind of better gas mileage. The SXT also comes in the SXT PLUS at $30,190 MSRP.
For those wanting to get a bit more serious, you have the Dodge Challenger R/T. The car features a 375-HP 5.7L HEMI® V8 Engine, 20 inch aluminum wheels and the price of $32,890 MSRP. The R/T harks back to the golden age of the Challenger and definitely feel like you’re part of a long line of heritage with this model. It comes in 13 muscle car colors as with the rest of the line – Contusion Blue, Pitch Black, Octane Red, TorRed, White Knuckle, Yellow Jacket, Granite, Billet, Destroyer Grey, Maximum Steel, Redline Tri-Coat, Green Go and Green Go.
The R/T line is further expanded with the R/T Plus at $35,890 MSRP, but then we start getting into more requisite muscle car territory with the R/T Shaker, which has a 375-HP 5.7L HEMI® V8 Engine and Shaker hood. This is where you are getting into the performance area of the Challenger lineup. The next above is the R/T PLUS SHAKER at $39,890 MSRP with the same horsepower and engine and a few added extras.
The R/T Scat Pack model is where things start to get interesting with a 485-HP 6.4L 392 HEMI® V8 Engine starting at $38,995 MSRP, then the 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker with Shaker hood, 180mph speedometer at $43,795 MSARP. The last in the mid-range comes the SRT 392 at $50,195 MSRP with the same 485-HP 6.4L 392 HEMI® V8 Engine.
The top offering from the Dodge Challenger lineup is the SRT Hellcat, which has a Supercharged 6.2L HEMI® SRT V8 Engine producing at the time a groundbreaking 707HP and 650lb. ft. of torque through a TorqueFlite eight speed automatic transmission. You also get extras such as 20×9.5 inch aluminium slingshot wheels for $64,195 MSRP. Considering the big horsepower jump from the base model, the Hellcat still does a reasonable 13mpg city and 21mpg highway.
The upcoming all wheel drive Dodge Challenger GT should be expected in the first quarter of 2017 with a 3.6-liter V6 around $34,490 and at some point in the near future the Challenger Demon will top the scorecards for the most powerful Challenger as yet.
