2017 Camaro ZL1 overview

The Camaro is now at the point in its life where we had to see the emergence of the ZL1 and how the sixth generation vehicle stands up to its predecessors. New design, performance and build make for a Camaro that will lead into the next decade.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 starts out with a 6.2-litre supercharged LT4 V8 engine giving 650bhp/650lbft, through a 10 speed automatic transmission developed with Ford. A six speed manual transmission is also available. It features the Performance Traction Management system from the Corvette along with active rear differential and active damping. The car also loses 100 kg in weight, making its 4,000lbs more nimble in the corners.

The new model also has 11 heat exchangers and a huge front grille to counter those engine temperature issues, which were a concern of the Z06.

0-60mph is done in around 3.5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds. The new 10 speed transmission is said to be one of the highlights with smooth shifting in full auto mode, but it’s the handling that has seen the biggest improvements. Some reports say it still isn’t as deft as the Ford Mustang GT350R, but still a vast improvement on previous models and being much more accessible, could be seen as the more obvious pick of the two.

For a price of around $65,000, a modern supercharged muscle car like the 2017 Camaro ZL1 is still a viable option.
