Europe has a very large spread of muscle car enthusiasts today, but they didn’t get their own dedicated muscle car per se back in the day. Arguably the nearest was the Ford Capri in looks. Sales started in early 1969, with the last ones built in 1986 and registered in 1989. Versions were sold in North America, Australia and South Africa, but the majority were a very British affair.
Initially, the aim was to have a European version of the Ford Mustang. A long hood, fastback design and a performance car for the masses. Being Europe, V4’s were mostly the order of the day, but you could get a 3.0L V6 if you asked nicely. There were limited edition and race versions, but the majority of the public bought into anything from a 1.6L to the 2.8i as a whole. Buy one with ‘Ghia’ trim upgrades and you were the talk of the town. The Capri was also very lightweight at the rear end. A few bags of sand in the back in the winter months were usually needed. Like many Fords of its day, show it a picture of a rain cloud and it immediately started to show signs of rust.
This example is a 2.8i version, dressed in black, which is the best colour for a 2.8i and is a very low mileage pristine example of the breed. However, you are paying top dollar for this one, especially from a dealer. Notice, ‘injection’ in big letters on the rear. This was a big thing to have in a European car at the time. Dual exhaust pipes as well meant definitely lightning fast.
Capable of 158 BHP at 130mph and 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds. This was fast for European roads of the time. This one was in the last line of ones built and registered on 28th February 1987. It comes with a full traceable history with just three previous owners. The interior is that distinctive plasticky 80s look, but everything looked like this in the mid. to late 80s. The Ricaro sports seats here look like they’ve never been sat on.
Its probably one of the most pristine and low mileage examples you can find, but you’re also paying a lot for this cleanliness. It’s still a very fine example and its only really missing the furry dice hanging from the rear view mirror.
