1970 Dodge Challenger Overview.
You could argue that the first Dodge Challenger was the ‘Dodge silver Challenger’ released in 1958 as a limited edition, but the Dodge Challenger we all know and love had its first generation in 1970 to 1974.
The first-generation Dodge Challenger was to capture some of the market from the Mustang and the Camaro, while also trying to take on the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird.
The exterior was designed by Carl Cameron from a sketch of his 1966 Charger prototype, especially using that car designs grille.
Arguably, coming a little late to the party, the Challenger couldn’t quite catch up with Mustang sales, but they did have the massive choice of any engine you could have in the Challenger with some of the rarest options being the most desirable today.
Over the years the Dodge Challenger and featured in many a TV show and movie, one of the most ubiquitous being the 1971 film ‘Vanishing Point’ which featured in 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Magnum, which was later resurrected in Quentin Tarantino’s movie ‘Death Proof.’
Rarities for the year were not just the rare optioned cars but also the Dodge Challenger T/A (Trans Am), which to compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans American Sedan Championship, Dodge had to produce a certain amount of road going cars with a destoked 340 engine.
A Western special was also produced the West Coast dealers which had a rear-exit exhaust system, Western special ID on the rear deck lid and the vacuum operated trunk release.
