This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 is said to have been sat in a garage for 40 years. Just after being originally bought it was treated to a load of upgrades from Baldwin Motion performance and with a 5:13 rear end replacing the original rear 4:56, it’s built for the strip. Plus points – the powertrain is numbers matching, 6000 rpm tach and gauge package, Buick interior 1 of 68 and a load of original parts.

The Baldwin upgrades also include as per the ad. – ‘a Hone a matic overdrive unit was installed the original rear 4:56 gear was removed and replaced with a four series carrier and 5:13’s. Rear trailing arms have been replaced with anti-hop bars, air shocks, air bags, 14×7 redlines on the front with period correct mags, the rear has 15×8’s with Dunlop 60’s and matching mag rims. The rear wheel wells have been professional rolled for these tires.’

The car clearly sparks interest as its a 1968 SS396, numbers matching, rare interior, has a bunch of vintage mods. and looks in relatively good condition. The other plus point is the sale comes with all the original parts taken off the vehicle.

However, the engine is currently out of the car and doesn’t have the original carb. There’s no mention of if any Motion upgrades on the engine itself. The bodywork does have some surface rust, some on the rear quarter panel and below the back window. From the one image the interior does look in great shape.

Being a bit cynical, me wonders why a rebuilt engine that is ready to go wouldn’t be dropped into a potential rarity like this as it would increase the value. A car that is running is better than one that is not. If everything checks out correctly on this car, the biggest stumbling block is the $70k asking price. A good condition 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 can be potentially bought for around $35k running, so the upgrades and rare Buick interior is being banked on to make up the difference. Maybe all the original parts could add up to a tidy sum, but the asking price seems very subjective. Maybe throw in an offer?
