It’s usually the common consensus that any muscle car built after around 1974, faded into a shadow of its former self. Neutered by the oil crisis and insurance costs of the time, by the mid-to-late 70s, large displacement engines were only a shadow of their counterparts of only a few years before.

The reality is that you can take more or less any vehicle with muscle car heritage and make it into a race winner. It’s almost more down to the vision of the drivers and mechanics involved, rather than the platform they are working on.

Here’s a great example from one of our readers, Tim Wilcox who has done just this with a 1980 El Camino.
It has that definitive late 70’s/early 80’s outer skin, but everything underneath has been treated to some racing upgrades, leaving a fine looking and performance ready machine.

The other great point about this El Camino is that it has side pipes, and that means it is inherently cool, right?

‘Hi, My name is Tim Wilcox from Florence Wisconsin.
This is my 1980 El Camino. 350 4 bolt main. Slightly built, with two Edelbrock 600 carbs. Turbo 350 trans, with a shift kit and slap stick shifter.’
