1,000 HP seems to be the magic round number to prove you have ultimate power and performance these days. Achieving this figure may seem straightforward if you can pick up the right engine, supercharger and/or turbos with a little know-how under your belt and/or deep pockets. However, it’s another thing keeping it going and making it real world usable. This article over at Hot Rod is a great way to see how a 2017 6.4L Hemi crate engine can be souped up to hit 1,050hp and hopefully stay there in the long run.

Like the best food, you need the best ingredients which means the final total spend (the breakdown price of each part is in the article) is not going to be cheap, but the idea is also longevity and reliability here, which ultimately means the best parts available. The powertrain centres around a 2017 392/6.4L Hemi V8 crate engine which the guys assembled in two days with all the parts. The engine without modifications is good for 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, so major upgrades are needed to more than double this output. The major price outlay comes from the 6.4L Hemi Crate Engine at $7,650, then the CNC Ported Heads $2,299, Dominator EFI $1,990.95 and Drop-In Pistons and Rods $1,748.94.

The engine was stripped back and basically stock parts were replaced with heavy duty counterparts which could take the far higher pressures needed to hit the 1,000+ HP mark. Molnar H-beam, pistons and rods turning the compression ratio from 10.9:1 to 9.8:1. Inverted domes on the pistons are the key here.

A Holley Dominator EFI, boost control, boosted cam profile, head studs and gaskets with the right amount of torque on all the studs to get the right balance. An Edelbrock Victor II intake, Milodon road-race pan, ATI damper to be dragstrip legal were later added. The dyno test eventually hits a max of 1033hp at 1043lbs. of torque at 5200rpm. The full parts list and price for each item is also listed in the article.

Taking out the factor of cost, this is a great overview recipe of how to put together a 1,000HP engine setup and possibly make your own dragstrip monster. The setup may seem expensive at first, but when you consider this takes you into supercar territory, it actually seems quite reasonable….
