Today’s roads are mostly clogged with mid-size SUV’s and compacts. Ev’s (sorry for cussing..) are talked about as the way of things to come, but just like a classic rock band, muscle and pony cars are as popular as ever and show no sign of going away. On paper, they shouldn’t be with huge V8 engines, but the whole point of the breed is that raw power and style never goes out of fashion.
Other vehicles on the road may give more practicality, but when it comes to performance for the money and always putting a smile on your face with the raw, unadulterated power, you can’t beat a good old muscle car. The heavyweight makes and models which are still flying the flag include the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger.

2018 was a good year for the muscle car with some standout models, letting the rest of the car market konw muscle cars are still here and as strong as ever. The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was one of the most hotly anticipated muscle cars of recent years, with an absolutely bonkers 6.2-liter V8 808 hp engine. The model was limited to just 3,300 examples.
Those who missed out can now look forward to the equally impressive 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque, which takes many of the desirable features of the Demon. The Dodge Hellcat itself has proved to be a winning formula, being arguably the most powerful modern muscle car and even being put into the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with 707 hp.
Not to be outdone, GM have the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z06/Camaro ZL1 with 650 hp, Ford with the 2018 Ford Mustang Bullitt, 2018 Shelby Super Snake (800hp), 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, a GT500 coming very soon. Evo.co.uk said about the Supersnake ‘Let’s be clear – 800bhp in a muscle car is an extremely silly idea.’ The reply would be, Yep, that’s the idea…’ Being conservative is not the way of things in the muscle car world.
Independent builders such as EQUUS have the Bass 770, and now the 2018 Throwback based around a Corvette, with a ridiculous 1000hp and 822 lb-torque.
The muscle car market may just be a tiny sliver of the whole automotive world, but it is a unapologetic brash and loud, raw fun breed of vehicle which will always give the most fun and even value for money when it comes down to dollars per horsepower. 2018 saw some standout muscle cars, which prove the fact that when it comes to high performance this breed still stands its ground. What’s not to like.
