Starsky & Hutch 1976 Ford Gran Torino
By Dave Ashton
Children who have matured to 40+ years of age by now, will have fond memories of the TV show Starsky & Hutch and the iconic red-and-white 1976 Ford Gran Torino. This video is about one collector Steve Bordi who owns a few of the original TV show cars, his journey to acquire them and a close-up look into the iconic striped tomato car which was an icon of the late 70s.
The 1976 Ford Gran Torino isn’t exactly a muscle car, as anything classed in that category by the mid to late 70s had virtually lost all of its muscle mass, with power and performance getting quite saggy. Paul Michael Glaser is down as hating the car at the time, but now realises the car’s iconic importance and not so much on how it handled at the time. How the car performed in real life shouldn’t really reflect on the show itself or the car. The car looked cool and iconic at the time in red with the vector stripe and chased down the bad guys in one of the top TV shows of the late 70s. It’s why the car is so iconic today, irrelevant of its real-life capabilities.
Wikipedia has a good rundown of the Torinos used in the TV shoots, how they were modified and other show details. It all adds up to how Starsky & Hutch influenced so many people and in some cases for a lifetime.
