Poor Hybrid Sales Threaten 2025 CAFE Targets
Usually when you read that car sales are down in general in certain parts of the market, it is sad news.
However, with the announcement that hybrid vehicles will not meet their 2025 targets of 54.5 mpg (4.3L/100 km), announced by SAE World Congress, is great news.
Although states like California aim for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030, cheap gas prices mean more powerful vehicles are the preference.
Even with current incentives for HEVs, models like the 707hp Dodge Hellcat are now sold out by the FCA.
“We believe that we do have technologies that can technically meet the targets but we must be able to commercially produce these vehicles and sell them to customers who want to keep returning to them,” stated Chris Cowland, director-Advanced and SRT Powertrain for Fiat Chrysler.
I see hybrids as an ‘interim’ technology.
Yes, they are on the way to solving the greenhouse gas issues and fossil fuel consumption, but as it stands, you still cannot beat the basic internal combustion engine. So until a direct replacement comes along, let’s enjoy things while we can!
In this article from Yahoo! autos – https://www.yahoo.com/autos/nine-models-that-prove-small-engines-can-beat-big-116392112457.html showing how smaller, more optimised engines are better, the last listing is for the Mustang GT, ‘ Now that’s a proper Mustang, romping to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and through the quarter mile in 13 seconds, with the bodacious rumble you can only get from a V-8.’ 5 liters and 435 hp is not small by world standards.
Basically, humans will live with restrictions if they have to do so. If we don’t have to, we want the biggest and best.
So, until the day arrives where we get the same power and performance with the same convenience of refuelling as we do today from the internal combustion engine, it will take a lot of convincing for us all to buy a hybrid.
