Muscle Car Talk: The Humble Dodge Dart.
By Mark Weisseg
I need to come clean here regarding this Dodge Dart. When I was a kid I saw a guy with a Dart like this and he jammed in a 426 hemi. That car could lay rubber forever if he dumped the clutch just right or he could take off like a rocket.
The modern Dodge Dart tried to come back in 2013, but died a death trying to be a tiny compact.
The original Dodge Dart was built between 1959 – 1976. The late 60s, early 70s models the ones to own. Muscle cars by the end of 1972 had gone a little flabby.
The Dodge Dart was like the Chevy Nova, simple to work on, light, compact and loads of fun.
They can still be picked up for a reasonable price compared to their other muscle car siblings. A mint condition 1972 Dodge Dart Demon 340 currently on eBay for $25,900 (as of 04/22/2016). Hemi versions are gold as are the 440ci. versions.
I always thought a light car with a big engine would be my ticket. Some problems arose with the back end being so light it would not get the traction to go but, as usual many figured it out.
To this very day I dream of having a Dart like this with a nice crate engine. Black bucket seats and three point seat belts. I just know the car would be a land missile. It’s probably a good thing I did not get to own one when I was a teenager as my death would have been close behind. Today, I think I am smarter than I was at 16 and would be able to control my outbursts better.
If I ever get the chance to do this I am here to tell you I will. I love this set up.
