Mr. Norm’s Grand Spaulding Dodge
By Dave Ashton
Buildings and locations of businesses come and go, but brand names can live on. This is the case with Norman Kraus, aka “Mr. Norms, which was originally a car dealer, Grand Spaulding Dodge, probably one of the most famous spots for Mopar enthusiasts.
The focus was on selling performance vehicles aka muscle cars to young buyers starting in 1962. If they didn’t have one from the factory, they would build it themselves. Examples were a 1967 Dodge Dart GSS (for Grand Spaulding Special) 383ci., an engine fitting counter to what Dodge thought was possible. The first dealership to install a dynamometer, free performance tunes also easily turning a 383 with 180hp into a 325hp monster. if Mopars were your thing in the late 60’s and 70’s, Mr. Norms was on your radar.
Norman Kraus sold his shares in the business in 1977 with its doors eventually shutting in the 1980’s. The location may have shut its doors but Mr. Norm lives on expanding into sports, trucks, vintage builds and modern Mopars. You can visit his most recent website here.
But what should be done with the original building? It looks like it’s been concreted up, but it would be wonderful if it can be made into a museum to commemorate Mr. Norms wonderful vehicles. You never know……
