The Magnificent 1968 Hurst Hemi Dart
by Kelly Kenworthy
There are those who are fanatics and those who love to debate. There are faster cars, better looking cars, but I would like to submit the 1968 Hurst Hemi Dart for your attention. The lightweight body mixed with the incredible engine leads me to think there can’t be many that can keep up with this beast.
1968 specs:
Chrysler’s Marine and Industrial Division supplied these 426 HEMI built by hand-picked techs. Blocks were iron with a 4.250-inch bore and a 3.750-inch stroke with 12.5:1 compression, sported a mild street cam, aluminum heads and a cross-ram twin four-barrel intake. These HEMIs were rated at 425hp, but nobody believes that, probably more like 535hp. Hurst added the Hooker headers and either the TorqueFlite or A-833 manual.
Quite a bit was done to deal with weight as well. Hurst installed fiberglass fenders, hoods, acid-dipped doors and even thinner-gauge front bumpers.
Here are some videos of the mighty car to give you an idea of what we are talking about.
