How A Rear Differential Works
I’m a great believer in trying to convey technical information in the simplest way possible. This video sums up up that point entirely showing the workings of a car’s rear differential.
The rear diff. is there to help the car get round a corner. The outside rear wheel spins faster as they travel further than the inside wheel when cornering, so the rear diff. compensates for this with special gearing. So, one rear wheel can spin independently of the other. Rear wheel drive vehicles house everything in the rear and front wheel drive vehicles have everything in the transmission housing.
There are different versions of rear differentials depending on needs, but this video gives you a basic overview of its application.
