Fords Final Thunderbirds 10 Years To The Day.
Hard to believe, but the last of Ford’s Thunderbirds rolled off the production line in Michigan in 2005.
The iconic car first came to market in 1955, with more than 14,000 sales that year. The car became iconic as a cultural symbol through songs of the time, like the Beach boys ‘fun’ fun’ fun’ and even John F. Kennedy’s inaugural procession in 1961 which included 50 Thunderbirds.
The T-Bird was essentially one of the classic symbols of the 1960s.
However, sales of the Thunderbird slowed in the 1990s with the car being discontinued in 97.
Ford did a turnaround in 2002, to appeal to the retro market and although sales were initially good, Ford just couldn’t justify continuing the model.
The Ford T-bird is one of those vehicles we thought would just be around forever, but when a car simply doesn’t sell any more, carmakers have to have very good reasons to continue production.
Will the T-bird ever come back?
Maybe, maybe not. More than likely at some point in the future Ford may be inspired to release some limited-edition models to see how the public react. But for the public to be interested in a new Thunderbird, Ford have really got to strike the balance between nostalgia and what new car owners want.
If a new Thunderbird did come out, it would at least be interesting to see what the results would be.
