Chevrolet Camaro SS Drag Race Development Program To Match The Demon?
By Dave Ashton
Just as the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon has started to up the stakes in the muscle car world and revitalize the modern muscle car on the dragstrip, it looks like the other manufacturers are following suit with their own programs, in this case Chevrolet. The Dodge Demon when fully optimized can do 0 to 60 mph around 2.3 seconds and a quarter mile time in 9.65 seconds.
Chevrolet’s performance division, the Camaro SS Drag Race Development Program is currently optimizing the Camaro SS to hit the insane performance times needed to take on the Dodge Demon. The current 6.2 L V8 engine, which has 455 HP needs a lot of upgrades, mostly integrating the work done on the ZR1, such as the prop shaft and ring gears, along with major engine upgrades such as camshaft and header packages.
Other upgrades include a 250mm, 3.73-geared rear-axle, new air induction and exhaust setup.
This has resulted in a 600 hp vehicle with a quarter-mile time of 10.685 seconds at 125.73 mph. Getting this into the low nines for a production vehicle is going to be very interesting, but the big question is will a dragstrip optimized Camaro be able to take on the Dodge Demon?
