BMW M8 Competition vs 825bhp Ford Mustang Review
By Dave Ashton
Here we have a short but succinct review from the guys at Autocar, on the merits of the BMW M8 Competition Coupe vs. the Ford Mustang CS800.
The BMW M8 Competition Coupe is a top-of-the-range sedan from the German car company. The Ford Mustang CS800 is a UK-tuned pony by Sutton Bespoke, capable of spitting out 825bhp, with a 0-60mph of roughly 4.0 seconds, and a top speed of 180mph. The BMW has stats. of 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds, producing 616bhp. As the review comes from the fair Isle of the UK, the costs come in with the BMW at £125,000, and the Mustang at £105,000.
A UK review should also ensure no rose-tinted glasses for either car make. On UK shores, a BMW is a common sight, with the Mustang becoming more numerous, but still a more exotic beast.
This test is more of a fun comparison rather than a blow-by-blow, scientific matchup. This point is probably due to the BMW being more an off-the-shelf car, and the Mustang is more custom. No matter the testing procedures, this little showdown still matches up American versus German engineering, with the final results echoing what we usually expect from both these cars.
For those impatient among you, the Mustang came out on top using two-wheel drive in the wet. Both are rear-wheel drive monsters, with the Mustang being the more ‘physical’ car, but that also makes it the most fun. The Beamer in four-wheel-drive seems to have the most traction and gets the overall technical victory in this department.
However, the usual question of, ‘if this was your money…’ is the usual deciding factor. One consensus is that if you already had a daily driver, and wanted a fun blast at the weekend, the Mustang is a great choice. If you have one parking space for a daily driver, then maybe the BMW. But the overall result is a draw, with the Mustang getting the moral victory.
‘A top, top giggle all the time,’ is the overall impression of the Mustang. The Mustang also costs less money than the BMW. The Beemer may be more ‘practical,’ but in this price range, it’s also about the experience. This is why we said earlier the results are as we expected.
The Mustang is selling well in Europe as no matter its technical deficiencies compared to the competition, it’s just plain fun to drive. It’s like Ford have hit the sweet spot recipe, having just the right amount of European and American ingredients. A seat of your pants American pony car template, with native European hand drive. Plus, the Mustang has a body design that isn’t too big for European roads.
At this point it looks like Europe is finally figuring out the pony car template.
