This is like no other Olds you’ve ever seen. This 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88 is the perfect combination of wildly aggressive exterior, comfy interior, and 425 big block power under the hood.
This coupe is striking from every angle. It has the popular lower, wider, longer stance that’s been taken one step further with the lower suspension. And the front end grabs attention with pods for each of the quad headlights. These ’60s Olds were usually chrome kings, but this one is interesting with the custom cinnamon paint covering much of the brightwork for a more modern look. These were the days when the tailfins were so wild that they had to be turned on their side. This went one step further with the design line created by the fins circling the entire car. You might wonder why with a design so cool you don’t see more of these cars on the road today. The simple reason is because they are rare. Less than 16,500 of these hardtop coupes were produced 55 years ago, so they are quite extraordinary today.
Open the door, and you’ll see cool mixture of new, and vintage. The tan leatherette seats come from a ’97 Cadillac Eldorado, and the transplant even included the power motors for the front buckets. The wraparound windshield helps to frames the dual cowl dashboard that looks like it was designed for a ’60 Corvette rather than a full size car built for extra-wide luxury. The driver gets a tall B&M performance shifter, and the original style large steering wheel that leaves a wide opening to see the cool new digital dashboard. Everyone gets to enjoy the AM/FM/CD stereo that’s iPod compatible, and provisions for air conditioning.
Those Super Sport-style stripes on the car are not just for cool style. Under the hood is a serious upgrade. Later in the ’60s Oldsmobile introduced arguably its best engine, the smooth and powerful Super Rocket V8. This coupe has been upgraded with the famous 425 cubic-inch big block motor that comfortably advertised its horsepower above 300. Just to make sure this monster motor is still performing at its peak, it’s topped with an Edelbrock 650 CFM four-barrel carburetor. With this kind of power, you better believe the dual exhaust makes a nice rumble at idle. But while this custom package might look and sound intimidating, it’s also still a luxurious Oldsmobile at heart. That’s why this has a great cruising combination of power steering and a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission.
