It’s hardly a surprise to those who have kept abreast of the Ford Mustangs antics over the years, but according to Google, it’s the most popular sports car across the globe.

Using fancy number-crunching software, fundandfindmycar.com researched the most sought-after 34 sports cars on Wikipedia, then used Google search and analytical software to find the most searched sports cars in each country.

After all the number-crunching, the Ford Mustang came out as number one in 29 countries, having over 979k searches. Many of these top searches come from Europe and similar. Even more interesting is the Dodge Challenger which is the most popular searched sports car in the US.

The Why’s and Wherefore’s

The Ford Mustang is helped to the top spot having decades of back history. The pony car was first revealed in 1964 and literally hit the ground running, selling like hotcakes ever since. The Mustang may be seen as a very ‘American’ template, but it has also been ported to right-hand drive to fit more European sensibilities. The Mustang has also a ‘daintier’ design than old school muscle cars, and even these days doesn’t seem that much bigger than the average sedan on European roads. This makes the Mustang fit into the rest of the landscape from a European perspective.

The Mustang is also relatively affordable in other countries. In the UK, a 2021 Ford Mustang GT can be picked up for £44,255(61,307.34). This will provide a burley 5L V8 engine, with a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. Knocking around the same price points are options like the Porsche 718 Boxster or a BMW M2. However, in comparison, the Ford Mustang provides equal amounts of power, with much more raw fun and swagger.

The Dodge Challenger outsells the Ford Mustang in Q2

In the second quarter of 2021, the Dodge Challenger just about pipped the Mustang in overalls sales across the United States. In this period, 14,676 Mustangs were shipped, compared to 15,052 Challengers. Many factors are at play here, such as a world chip shortage and production delays which have affected all carmakers.

Europeans may see the Mustang as an exotic sports car alternative, with heaping’s of American swagger. In the US, people have grown up with muscle and pony cars on their doorstep. So, it’s no wonder that the Dodge Challenger has a more pure template that harks back to the golden age of muscle cars.

The Dodge Challenger design may be aging at this point, but even with the SXT model you are treated to a 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine or you could go for the full-fat Hellcat models with 6.2-liter V8s, making 717 or 797 hp. A 2020 Ford Mustang Ecoboost can be picked up for a similar price.

The most important point here is that if it’s the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, or even the Camaro, lagging way behind in sales, muscle cars are becoming more front of mind across the globe.

It would be very interesting if Dodge ported the Challenger and Charger to right-hand drive for other parts of the world.
