Why NHRA Parachutes Are So Important.
By Dave Ashton
Having a parachute strapped to the rear of a car initially seems only sensible if the thing was in free fall, thrown out of a plane or similar. However, the speeds these vehicles can reach in such quick time is probably the equivalent of a vertical free fall so anything you can employ to stop these things is a benefit.
Brakes alone won’t do, but what if your parachute refuses to open in one such race? This is what happens during this video during a NHRA drag race. the Red car’s ‘chute tries to open, but drags limply behind the vehicle. Standard brakes are enough to stop at this speed, so it’s down to the sand trap and netting at the end of the strip to stop the car carrying on for at least a good few other miles.
So, if you ever for a parachute installed on the rear of one of these cars was excessive, it’s there for one big safety reason.
